INSTRUCTIONS
TO AUTHORS
General
Manuscripts submitted in all fields of natural
and applied sciences are considered for publication in the Journal
of Science, University of Kelaniya on the understanding that they
have not been published, submitted or accepted for publication
elsewhere. Three types of papers may be submitted.
1. Full-length papers – These should describe
new and carefully confirmed findings and experimental procedures
should be given in sufficient detail for others to verify the
work. Authors are recommended to keep their papers short. Preferably
less than 20 manuscript pages. The paper should comprise the following
sections.
a. Abstract of not more than 250 words.
b. Keywords should be given for indexing and information retrieval
c. Introduction
d. Materials and Methods/Experimental
e. Results
f. Discussion
g. Conclusions
h. Acknowledgements
i. References
2. Short communications - A
short communication should not exceed four printed pages in length
and is suitable for recording the results of complete small investigations
or giving details of new methods of techniques and apparatus.
Progress reports are not acceptable.
3. Review papers – These
should be submitted only after prior consultation with the editors.
Preparation of Manuscripts
Three copies of each manuscript must be submitted
to the Editor in Chief. All manuscripts must be in English and
typed double spaced on one side of A4 paper with ample margins
on all sides. All the pages must be numbered consecutively. The
first page should always be the title page with the name(s) of
the author(s), Institution(s) and address(es).
References
References in the text should be cited as the
author’s name followed by the year of publication in brackets.
Eg: Gunawardene & Fernando (1995) or where appropriate, (Gunawardene
& Fernando 1995). At the end of the paper references should
be listed alphabetically. Titles of Journals should be given in
full.
References to books or chapters should include
names and initials of editors, page numbers, place of publication
and name of publisher.

Journal articles:
Ali A.B. 1990. Some ecological aspects of fish populations in
tropical rice fields. Hydrobiolgia 190: 215-222.
Books:
Ellis M.B. & J.P. Ellis 1985. Microfungi on Land Plants, Croom
Helm Ltd., Kent, U.K.
Articles in Edited volumes/books:
Fernando, C.H. 1990. Reservoirs and lakes in southeast Asia. In:
Lake and Reservoir Ecosystems (F.B. Taub ed.) pp 411-446. Elsevier,
Amsterdam.
Illustrations
Submit each table, diagram, graph, map or photograph
in one original and two copies. All illustrations must bear author’s
name. Tables and legends of illustrations should be written on
separate sheets in numerical order and their approximate position
in the text should be indicated by a marginal note.
Magnifications should be indicated on scale lines.
Photographs should be preferably black and white. Colour plates
may be included at the author’s expense.
Abbreviations and Units
Binomial Latin names of microorganisms, plants
and animals must be used in accordance with the international
rules of nomenclature and given in full. SI units and symbols
should be used for physical properties.
The final version of the manuscript if accepted
for publication should be submitted in a diskette in word.
Proofs
Page proof must be corrected immediately on receipt
and returned to the Editor in Chief.
Offprints
Fifteen off prints of each paper will be supplied
free of charge. Authors will have the option of buying further
off prints at reasonable prices.
