>< Objectives : At the end of this course unit, the student will be able to work with operating systems, demonstrate an understanding of the concept of system analysis and design and computer networks, work with e-mail and internet, understand the social implications of using computers, work on word Processing and handle electronic spreadsheets.
>< Course Content :

The computer generations, Basic components and organization of computer systems, Characterization/classification of computer systems, Operating systems, Data representation and storage; Introduction to Systems engineering, Batch Processing, Single-user-online, Multi-user-online and distributed systems, Control and embedded systems, An awareness of standard formal methods of systems design, Documentation and analysis; Introduction to computer networks and topologies; Introduction to the internet and e-mail; Computer crime, Security issues, Computer employment and privacy, Computer law in Sri Lanka; Introduction to Word Processing using a commonly used word Processing package, Creating documents and tables, Mail-merge, Inserting files and images etc; Introduction to Spreadsheets: Training in the usage of commonly used electronic spreadsheet software.

Practical sessions: Using suitable software.
