Objectives: Provide an understanding of the role and purpose of a database management system in an organization. Enable students to describe and explain the various logical database architectures that exist and to be able to evaluate their relative merits and drawbacks. To provide an insight into the internal organization of a database management system and provide sufficient knowledge on database query languages.

Motivation: Introduction, Information and Management Problems addressed by Database concept, Define the database concept.

Data Models: Introduction, Historical data models,Analysis of Information Requirements, Using ER Models for analysis and specification, Data Modelling Standards, The Relational Model, Data intergrity, Normalization.

Database Management Systems: Introduction, What is DBMS?, Architecture of DBMS.

Practical DBMS Skills: Introduction, Creating Tables, Issuing Queries (single table query, Join, Outer Join etc), SQL Commands
Introduction to Concurrency and Recovery Management
Database Security,
The role of DBA,
Other Database Models (Network, Hierarchical, OO)
Commercial DBMS
Practical sessions using MS Access
