>< Type/ Status : Core
>< Course title : Molecular Genetics and
Gene Technology
>< Prerequisite : BIOL 11032
>< Objective : By the end of the course the
student will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the nature and expression
of genes, essential techniques used for gene manipulation and application of
biotechnological approaches for plant improvement.
>< Course content:
Structure and organization of prokaryotic and
eukaryotic genomes. Structure and function of prokaryotic genes. Regulation
of prokaryotic gene expression. Plasmids and gene transfer among bacteria. Introduction
to eukaryotic genes and their transcription. Isolation and modification of genes.
Construction and screening of genomic and DNA libraries. Gene cloning and transgenic
organisms. Transposable genetic elements and their use in gene modifications.
Production of transgenic plants using genetic engineering and use of Ti plasmid
in plant genetic engineering.
