Teaching and learning objectives:
The objectives of this course are to provide in-depth knowledge on database architecture and data modelling. This course will also provide an insight into the internal organization of a database management system and sufficient knowledge on database query languages.
After completion of this course students are enabled to describe and explain the various logical database architectures, design and develop databases using relational model and manipulate data & prepare forms and reports using Structured Query Language.

Course Content:

The role of DBMS in organizations, why databases, the database approach, database fundamentals (uses, limitations, elementary data modelling, entities and relationships, relational database architecture, conceptual modelling, data independence, data dictionary, data manipulation and query languages) Historical database architectures and comparison with relational architecture.

Relational Model: Introduction to relational model, relations, topples, attributes, restriction on relations, notion of keys & referential integrity, normalization, relational integrity, relational algebra, relational calculus, introduction to other DBMS issues such as concurrency, recovery, and security.

>< Methodology:
The course will be delivered in a combination of lectures, supervised hands on practical sessions on SQL, tutorials and group work.

End-of-semester examination and continuous assessment.
