>< Objective: By the end of the course, the
student will be able to demonstrate essential knowledge, understanding and skills
needed in studying plant functions.
>< Course content:
Work with aqueous solutions and buffers. Determination
of water potential and solute potential. Measurement of transpiration. Stomatal
movement. Separation of photosynthetic pigments. Quantitative analysis of chlorophyll.
Hill reaction. Acid accumulation of CAM plants. Oxygen liberation in photosynthesis.
Permeability of cell membranes to different ions and molecules. Mineral deficiency
symptoms in plants. Shoot and root growth. Leaf area measurements. Hormonal
action. Seed viability and germination tests.
Studies on membrane permeability. Studies on enzyme activity and kinetics.
>< Methodology: Five
hours of laboratory exercises per week.
>< Scheme of evaluation: End of course practical
examination.
