Failures of classical mechanics, wave-particle duality, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, postulates in quantum mechanics, Schrodinger equation, particle in 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional boxes, rotation in 2-dimension, harmonic oscillator, and hydrogen atom.

Phase equilibria

Phase rule, phase diagrams, one and two component liquid systems, ideal and nonideal solutions, zeotropy, azeotropy, fractional distillation, two component solid-liquid systems, three component systems.

Atomic and molecular spectroscopy

Electromagnetic radiation and matter, L-S coupling, J-J coupling, term symbols, polarization, spectra of many electron atoms, rotational spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, electronic spectroscopy.

Surface and Colloid Chemistry

Surface phenomena, physisorption and chemisorption, Kelvin equation, Gibbs and Langmuir adsorption isotherms, macromolecules and colloids, preparation and purification of colloids, surfactants and detergents.
