>< Teaching and learning objectives:
The aim of this course is to provide an understanding
of management perspective of information systems, to provide basic understanding
of the role of IT manager in an organizational context, and the ethical and
legal aspects of information systems management.
On successful completion of the course students will be able to describe and
explain the strategic importance of different information systems in an organizational
setting and the different issues that have to be considered when managing them
in a cost effective way.
>< Course Content:
Role of IS within the enterprise: strategic, tactical,
operational; Effects of IS on organizational structure, IS and continuous improvement,
issues pertaining to use of software in organizations.
Information systems management: IS planning
(strategic, short range, re-engineering, continuous improvement). Control of
IS functions (e.g. EDP auditing, outsourcing etc.). Staffing and human resource
management (skills planning, staff performance management, education & training,
competition, co-operation, reward structures); IS functional structure: internal
vs. outsourcing; Managing IS as a business (customer definition, IS mission,
critical success factors etc.), IS as a service function, Financial administration,
disaster planning, legal and ethical aspects of IS (licensing, privacy, ethics
and intellectual property rights).
>< Methodology:
The course will be delivered in a combination of lectures,
supervised hands on practical and group work.
>< Scheme of Evaluation:
End-of- semester examination and continuous assessment.
