>< Objective: At the end of this course,
the student will acquire comprehensive knowledge and develop a critical view
of ethical issues involved in biotechnology.
>< Course content:
An overview of advances in biotechnology and
their impact on society. Introduction to bioethics. Ethical issues of genetic
testing, gene therapy, and human and animal cloning. Controversies over genetically
modified organisms and genetically modified food. Potential ethical issues arising
from human and other animal genome projects. Biotechnology and environment:
ethical reasons for concern. Risks of biological warfare. Biosafety, national
and international conventions on biosafety and regulation of biotechnological
applications. Conservation and protection of genetic resources.
